Haute Couture: Intensive (Tambour Beading Levels 1 & 2)
Suitable for beginners and novices alike.

 

Setting up home for one week at the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design, Hand & Lock will be teaching the famous embroidery technique, Tambour beading. Join us to study the technique that has been popular on International Catwalks and seen in shows by Elie Saab and Oscar De La Renta. Tambour beading also known as Lunéville or Crochet de Lunéville is a French Haute Couture technique where beads or sequins can be attached to a fabric. The embroidery is done with a hook working through a fabric stretched tight as a drum. Students will learn how to create a design, set up a full size frame and how to work the hook through the fabric without catching before learning the technique.
DAY 1
– Introduction to Hand & Lock.
– Set Up a full size frame.
– Learn the chain stitch as well as becoming comfortable with the tambour hook on plain opaque fabric
DAY 2
– Learn how to add beads to threads and attach to fabric using the chain stitch
– Learn how to attach sequins.
DAY 3
– Move onto Larger more complex design
– Learn the Vermicelli technique.
DAY 4
– Continue on larger design
 – Learn Pulled Stitch technique.
DAY 5 
– Recap over work and discuss any unanswered questions.

Goldwork in Couture Level One

Suitable for beginners and novices alike

Hand & Lock have joined forces with the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design to teach a series special of embroidery classes. Join us to study Goldwork, the art of embroidering using metal threads. The term ‘goldwork’ is used even when the threads are imitation gold, silver, or copper, or coloured allowing for an array of textures and colours to express your vision in. Students will learn soft string padding, felt padding, pearl purl, cut work in smooth and rough bullion, chips, passing and essing.

DAY 1
– Introduction to Hand & Lock.
– Set Up a full size frame.
– Learn how to transfer the design onto fabric
– Start to learn soft string padding
DAY 2
– Continue to learn soft string padding
– Move onto Felt padding
– Learn Cut work
DAY 3
– Continue with Cutwork
– Learn how to couch passing down
Day 4
– Learn chipping with short billions, and how to edge and area in Purl Pearl
DAY 5 

– Continue with techniques learnt and if time permits essing.
– Recap over work and discuss any unanswered questions.

Monogramming Level One

Suitable for beginners and novices alike

Setting up home for one week at San Francisco School of Needlework and Design, Hand & Lock  will be offering an opportunity to learn the beautiful art of monogramming. This three-day Monogramming class with teach you how to set a full size embroidery frame, transfer your chosen letters to the material and then show you how to stitch out your letters in the traditional way still used in the London based Hand & Lock Atelier. You will come away with the knowledge a variety of Monograms that will allow you to personalize any garment or item you may wish. The class is suitable for beginners, as well as embroiders with a more comprehensive understanding of “stitch.”

Class Structure 

Day 1
– Introduction
– Discuss samples and tools
– Set Up a large size embroidery frame.
– Start to learn small size monograms in stem stitch (Fishtail and block)
Day 2
-Continue with smaller monograms (script)
– Learn how to transfer monogram design onto fabric
– Start to work on larger French monogram with Satin Stitch and Padding
Day 3
– Finish working on larger French monogram.
– Add different materials to Monograms.
– Discuss work
All materials provided.
